It may have been raining throughout the day in Dunmore on Sunday but it wasn’t exactly raining scores as the Colts junior side came out on the right side of a low scoring encounter against a physical Galwegians side.
A much changed lineup from last weekend saw the Colts struggle to get up to the pace of the game early on which allowed Galwegians to have the majority of the possession for the opening 15 minutes. Gradually as the half wore on the Colts started to find their rhythm which resulted in the game’s opening score.
A fine break through the middle from captain Liam Griffith saw him pop off just at the right time to David Bell. He jinked his way through the Galwegians backline to touch down. The conversion was added by Shane Meehan and the Colts had a healthy 7-0 lead.
Although behind Galwegians continued to probe the Colts defensive line and they got a breakthrough just before half time when their powerful forward unit put a number of phases together before crossing to leave it 7-5 in favour of the Colts as the teams went for their half time team talks.
Buoyed by that good finish to the second half Galwegians continued in the same vein and double their try count early in the second half. From an attacking lineout inside the Colts 22′ they moved the ball at speed before touching down in the corner. The conversion was missed and the Colts knew a try would put them back in front.
It looked that elusive score would never come as the half wore on, however that changed with just six minutes to go. When David Bell spotted a gap he cut through beating a number of players before offloading to Jack Vahey who used his trademark burst of speed to beat the Galwegians full back to score. Although the conversion was missed the Colts saw out the final few minutes to score a fine 12-10 win. *Thanks to Micheal Gleeson for the match photos.
