Connemara RFC 38-12 Claremorris RFC

Rugby ScrumThere may have been a nice view surrounding the entry into the pitch in the heart of Clifden but things were not too pretty on the pitch as the Colts Junior team lost out to their hosts on Sunday in round 5 of the Connacht rugby J2 league.

The Galway men started much the better and were 14-0 up inside 10 minutes as the Colts defence and tackling left a lot to be desired. The remainder of the half did not get much better as the hosts tagged on two more converted tries and a penalty to lead 31-0 at half time.

The second half was a big improvement as the Colts were determined not to end the game without a score. It was however Connemara who continued to keep the scoreboard operator busy as another converted try on 52 minutes meant to it was 38-0 to the hosts and the Colts were looking at receiving one hell of a beating.

The lads in red and white were finally spurred into action and after some fine work by their pack and in particular John Costello and Padraic Kilboyle, Fergal Leonard crashed over to get the Colts on the board.

For the remainder of the game the Colts had the majority of possession and try number two was on the board. After the ball broke loose in the middle of the pitch out-half Shane Meehan grubber kicked in behind the Connemara defence before collecting and crossing over for a fine individual try. He was also successful with the conversion as the game ended 38-12.

The first half had few positives but the Colts can be heartened by how they finished the final 30 minutes of the game and will be hoping to end 2013 with a win against neighbours Castlebar on Saturday night(14th). The game kicks off at 7.30pm in Castlebar so come along and show the lads your support.
