The Colts U13 team continued their impressive start to the season with an excellent three try win over Sligo RFC in round two of the Connacht Rugby U13 league on the Convent pitch last Saturday.
Not exactly an ideal day for rugby as the wind swirled and the rain came down, heavy at times the Colts made an impressive start and got the game’s opening score within three minutes thanks to the boot of out-half Kyle Leonard who confidently knocked over a penalty after Sligo were adjudged to have gone off their feet.
Just over ten minutes later the Colts got the game’s opening try when after an excellent run by Adam Vahey, Dylan Morris cut through the Sligo defence before Cian Quinn barged his way over the line. Kyle Leonard again did the business with his trusty right boot and the Colts had a commanding 10-0 lead as the teams headed for half time.
If the Colts made a quick start in the first half they started even quicker in the second half. From the kick off the Colts forwards recycled the ball before Dylan Morris cut through the Sligo defence with another trademark run to touchdown for his second try in as many games. The conversion was never in doubt from Kyle Leonard and the Colts had a healthy 17-0 lead with majority of the second half still to play.
Both sides made plenty of changes throughout the second half however the quality of rugby wasn’t diminished as the Colts continued to defend their line doggedly while all the while looking dangerous when going forward. The games third try was another great Colts team score as the Colts forwards worked their way inside the Sligo half before a 30 yard burst of pace and power saw Matthew Merrick cross in the corner. Cathal Joyce never looked in bother with the tough conversion to cap an excellent 24-0 win for the Colts which has now seen them win their opening two games with conceding a point.
Next up is a home game against Westport this Saturday November 8th at 12pm.
