The Colts Junior team recent run of good results came to an end over the weekend after they lost out to a more efficient and organised Tuam side in round 5 of the Connacht rugby J2 league.
The hosts started the brighter and the Colts were struggling to get their hands on the ball. After some sustained pressure Tuam were awarded a penalty inside the Colts 22′ which gave them a 3-0 lead. That lead was quickly doubled when the Colts were again penalised at ruck time and suddenly Tuam had a 6-0 lead.
As the half wore on the Colts got more into the game but just could not put a number of phases together to get that all elusive score. But for some missed kicks the sides could have been level at half time however as it was the Colts trailed 6-0 when the teams changed ends.
The Colts were much improved at the start of the second half. They reduced the deficit to three points when Trevor Nally knocked over a close range penalty. The Colts however could not build on this spell of possession and when Tuam had a lineout on the Colts 5 meter line they forwards worked the ball to cross over in the corner. Although the conversion was missed Tuam had a healthy 11-3 lead.
A number of changes were made in the second half but the Colts could not quite break the well organised Tuam defence. Tuam then killed the game as a contest when they crossed for a second try after good work from their backs. To their credit the Colts kept plugging away and when they were awarded a close in penalty Luke Ronayne took it quickly to barge his way over the line. The conversion couldn’t be added as Tuam ran out 16-8 winners.
