After a numerous weather interruptions the Colts junior team finally got some league action on Sunday as they travelled to Corinthians RFC in round 8 of the Connacht J2 league.
To say match conditions were far from ideal would be an under statement as the pitch conditions had taken a real battering after the recent spell of wet weather. This however was the same for both sides and all players must be commended for the effort they put in.
It was the Colts who started the brighter and they put Corinthians under real pressure during the opening 40 minutes. The Claremorris pack laid the foundation for this early pressure particularly at scrum time and this allowed the Colts to gain much needed territory advantage.
After some good carries by David Coen and Morgan Jennings the Colts earned a penalty under the posts however instead of taking the three points they choose to run it and were duly rewarded. David Coen and Morgan Jennings both made good ground before Padraic Kilboyle got possession and cut through the Corinthians defence to give the Colts a 5-0 lead.
From the resulting kickoff the Colts were under pressure, however, their defence stood firm with the Adam McLoughlin and Liam Griffith doing some great work at the breakdown. The Colts defence was finally breached before half time as Corithians worked the ball through their backs to touch down and tie the game at 5-5 at half time.
If the Colts work rate was top notch in the first half it didn’t last for the second 40 minutes as within five minutes of the restart Corinthians were in front and were never going to relinquish that lead. The hosts upped their game considerably in the second half and ran out easy winners 38-5. The Colts can take some positives especially from some of their first half play which will stand them in good stead for the final rounds of the Connacht league.
