The Colts junior side got back to winning ways when they overcame a physical Carrick on Shannon side in round 8 of the Connacht J2 league on Sunday.
The conditions were tough for both sides when wind and rain making ball handling tricky for both sides. It was Carrick who made the better start and were 8-0 after 15 minutes. Firstly they worked the ball off a lineout before crossing in the corner. They extended their lead via a penalty when the Colts were penalised at ruck time. It was after this concession the Colts sparked into life. After good play from a lineout the Colts put a number of phases together via backs and forwards before David Bell spotted a gap to sneak over to get the Colts back in the game.
Suddenly the Colts were playing with confidence and had try number two on the board when five minutes. Another solid Colts lineout saw John Costello & Luke Ronayne both gain ground and edge the Colts close to the line. One final effort saw Rob Kelly cross for the Colts second try. Jack Vahey added the extras and the Colts were in front 12-8 a lead they would not relinquish.
The Colts continued their good play into the second half and extended the lead through a Jack Vahey penalty. Although behind Carrick kept plugging away and were back in the game when they breached the Colts defence to trail just 15-13.
A powerful scoring effort in the final quarter saw the Colts seal the win. From a Carrick restart the Colts turned over possession before Liam Murphy got on the end of a fine Colts counter attack. Another Jack Vahey penalty gave the Colts a healthy 25-13 lead. Jack Vahey wasn’t finished scoring however as he gained possession on the Carrick 22′ before cutting trough a number of tackles to cross under the posts. His final act of the game was to kick the resultant conversion and give the Colts an excellent 32-13 win.
