The Mount St Michael Convent pitch in Claremorris was a hive of activity on Saturday morning March 10th as Claremorris Colts RFC hosted a spectacular girls’ mini rugby blitz. Teams from Westport, Galwegians and Ballina travelled to the south Mayo town for the festival of rugby and by all accounts, a thrilling morning ensued.
While still only a relatively young club, the Colts took the brave step in branching out into girls mini rugby at the beginning of this season and certainly, it has been a tremendous success.
Energetic, eager to learn and always anxious to prove their worth on the field, the Claremorris girls have come on in leaps and bounds in a few short months and on Saturday morning, they – along with their counterparts from Galway, Ballina and Westport – put on some fine displays of rugby.
Parents and coaches cluttered the sidelines as the Claremorris players showed their skills and aptitude on the field, with tries coming easy for the south Mayo girls. Evenly matched with the opposition, the Colts enjoyed a fabulous morning of success on the pitch and there was great excitement as IRFU and Connacht goodies were handed out to the players after the games.
In a fantastic first season for the Claremorris girls, the Colts have once again shown they have staying power and as well as the boys teams, the Claremorris girls will undoubtedly be the ones to watch in the years ahead.
