The Colts junior side hit the N17 on Friday night for round 1 of the Connacht Junior cup. It was a intense affair throughout the 80 minutes but it was a more streetwise Tuam outfit who claimed the win.
Although operating a division lower than their hosts it was the Colts who made the brighter start as they made use of strong breeze blowing in the first half. Their good play and ferocious tackling was exemplified by backrower John Costello who put in a crunching tackle as Tuam attached to well and truly snuff out the danger. He was ably assisted in defence by Adam Connolly and Liam Griffith it a tough opening 20 minutes.
However all the Colts good work was undone on 23 minutes as a clearing kick was blocked down with the Tuam attackers winning the foot race to crash over under the post. This meant the home side led 7-0 at the break.
The second half began similar to the first with Colts having possession and territory advantage but unable to get that all important score. Luke Ronayne in particular carried a mountain of ball but it was all in vain for the Colts. The decisive score of the second half came in the 55th minute. From a solid Tuam scrum they sent the ball through the hands to their winger who burnt the Colts defence before touching down. The conversion was also added and Tuam led 14-0.
It was lead that they never looked like giving up as the ran out comfortable winners. It was another brave effort from the Colts whose winless run against Tuam continues for another season!
