The Colts welcomed Corrib RFC to Ballyhaunis to round off this year’s U14 league and it ended with a win for Claremorris.
As the Colts lined up there were some positional switches and some new faces getting their chance to shine. With no game for two weeks the Claremorris men were keen to get going and started very positive. They moved the ball with ease with everyone getting a touch in the first few minutes. The first score came with some great handling and off loading led by Steven Mc Greal who set up his captain Brian Quinn to score.
Jack Ronayne was next on score sheet with a try from this impressive full back. The men in red were playing with confidence and aggression and there was no sign of panic when Corrib stormed down the field and scored after 16 minutes. Back came the Colts with Liam and Brandon Walsh pulling the strings in midfield and Brian O Reilly making some hard yards which allowed Steven Mc Greal to power over for a great team try. There was one more score before half time with the lighting quick Ronan Commons touching down and Jack Ronayne adding the points leaving it 22-5 at half time.
The Claremorris lads showed no signs of letting up and got back scoring with captain Brian Quinn scoring after two minutes and Jack Ronayne added the extra points as he would for the rest of the tries scored in this half. Brian O Reilly powered the length of the pitch to score under the posts. However the men from Corrib weren’t finished yet, they used the pick and go game to great effect to score and a super kick added the extras for them. Speed of passing and the then just the speed of Ronan Commons led to the next score, and Brian O Reily got his hat-trick to finish off the league campaign.
The league is now over, 13 games played and 12 games won, the Colts finish top. However there is no silverware to show for this impressive achievement yet. A league semi-final date with South Sligo awaits next weekend. Then the following weekend the Connacht U13 cup kicks off with a game against Westport RFC. So more rugby to look forward to in the coming weeks.
