Claremorris Colts Junior team recorded a fine win over Galwegians in Crowley park on Sunday.
The Colts made the brighter start and James Shaughnessey had the Colts on the scoreboard when he burst through the ‘Wegians defence and although been ankle tapped he touched down for the games opening try. The resulting conversion however hit the post.
The Colts continued to pile on the pressure and Damien Meehan had try number two on the board after some fine work by the forwards and in particular Liam Griffith. Shane Meehan knocked over the conversion to give his side a 12-0 lead. This concession sparked the Galway lads into action and they hit back with a try of the own to leave the scores 12-5 approaching half-time.
Just before the half-time break Claremorris captain Fergal Leonard snuck over from the back off a ruck after some fine carries by Josh McLaughlin, Padraic Kilboyle and Liam Griffith. Again the extras were added and the Colts were 19-5 to the good at half-time
The home side started the second half much better than the first and had the scoreboard operator working in no time. After some poor defending by the Colts Galwegians crossed in the corner to cut the deficit to 19-10.
Galwegians continued to dominate possession and had their third try of the game when they touched down under the posts. The conversion was duly added to leave Claremorris in front 19-17. The Colts regrouped and were looking to close out the game with a match winning score however a Galwegians RFC was injured with 10 minutes resulting in the game having to be abandoned. Thankfully news has reached us that this player did not suffered serious injury. He has been diagnosed with a soft tissue injury & has been released from hospital.
It was a fine all round display for the Colts with some excellent ball handling and teamwork catching the eye. The game was also notable for a number of players who performed particularly well on their debuts for Claremorris RFC.
