The Colts Mini Rugby teams were in Tuam on Saturday, where they took on their counterparts from the North Galway club and, by all accounts, did themselves proud. Despite cold conditions at the Tuam Rugby grounds, there were some fantastic displays of rugby from both the Claremorris and Tuam sides, with the majority of the teams very evenly matched on the day.
In the U-12 category, best for Claremorris were Rory Lavery and birthday girl Liz Murphy. The U-10 and U-11 age groups joined forces on the day and best for the Colts here were Bradley Hughes and Conrad Dixon. In the U-9 category, best for Claremorris were Eoin O’Connor and Adam Vahey, while Mark Gibbons stood out for the Colts in the U-8s.
This Saturday, February 5, Claremorris Colts RFC will host a Mini Rugby blitz at home, with teams due to travel from Headford, Ballyhaunis and Monivea. Games will begin at 11am and all players are asked to be at the pitch by 10.30am.
The U-13s and U-15s teams were also in action at the weekend. The U-13s took on Ballaghaderreen in a League game on Sunday and put in a very credible performance, emerging victorious on a score line of 39-0. Best for the Colts on the day were Matthew Macken (captain), Paddy Barry, Brian Quinn and Jurgan Pilbrow.
Sunday’s game for the U-13 side was their second last of the League, with just a game against Sligo left to play. With the League almost at an end, the Colts U-13s team will now start preparing for the first round of the Connacht Cup, which is scheduled to take place on March 6.
Meanwhile, the U-15s played two challenge matches at the weekend. Travelling to Ballinrobe on Saturday, the Colts were defeated by a very strong home side. On Sunday however, they beat Ballaghaderreen in their second challenge game of the weekend.
Unfortunately, the Colts U-15 rugby team had to make do with second place in the Connacht Development League for this season after they suffered defeat in the title decider in Dunmore last week.
But, while they might be out of the Development League, all is not lost for the U-15 side. They will begin their Connacht Cup campaign on the weekend of February 12/13, where they will meet Ballaghaderreen in their opening encounter.
