Claremorris Colts RFC kicked off their new season in style at the weekend, when the U-12 team travelled to Athlone to participate in an All-Ireland Rugby Blitz. Under the guidance of Pearse Hahessy, Fergal Leonard and Eddie McLoughlin, the team did their club, town and county proud as they made their mark on the contest at the Buccaneers RFC grounds on Sunday, October 3.
The enthusiastic youngsters enjoyed some success on the field of play, as well as recording a number of draws on the day. For the Colts – who had just returned to training a week earlier – the Blitz gave them a taste of what’s to come in the busy season ahead and dusted off any cobwebs that may have settled during the summer months!
In all, the team played brilliantly on Sunday, displaying some excellent talent – particularly when you consider they are just returning after the summer break. The Colts Player of the Day went to Simon Vahey.
This weekend, the underage players will be in action once again, when the U-8, U-9, U-10, U-11 and U-12 teams travel to Ballyhaunis to play in a local Mini Rugby Blitz. Players are asked to be at the rugby grounds in Ballyhaunis by 10.30am.
Meanwhile, the Colts have decided to branch out into Youth Rugby this year and already, there is tremendous interest and zest among the players. Training for the U-13 and U-15 teams takes place on Saturday afternoons from 12.45pm until 2pm at the Convent pitch, as well as on Wednesday evenings at the Race Track from 6pm until 7.30pm.
