The Claremorris Colts U-11 mini rugby squad travelled to Dubarry Park, Athlone to play in the Connacht U-11 blitz on Saturday 9th April 2011. Paired with An Ghaeltacht, Ballaghaderreen, Carrick-on-Shannon and Sligo all nineteen young Colts, who travelled, gave a good account of themselves and were delighted to receive their Connacht medals after four highly entertaining games of mini rugby.
The Colts came up against a very strong Ballaghaderreen team in the first game of the day and despite gallant performances from Ciaran Hatcher-Devlin and Cian Goggins, Claremorris were not able to prevail against our near neighbours. Game two was a close affair against Carrick-on-Shannon which was settled in favour of the Colts by a single try from Dimitry Trench. The Colts next game was against Sligo, who proved too strong on the day despite the efforts of Conrad Dixon, Harry Burke and Henry Freney. The final game was against An Ghaeltacht and playing their best rugby of the day, Claremorris emerged victorious with fine performances from Alan Campbell, Caolin Langan Walsh and Mark Walsh.
The Connacht blitz marks the end of the mini rugby season for the u-11 squad. All the coaches would like to express their appreciation to the parents who made the long trip to Athlone, for their vocal support for the players on the day and all the help throughout the season. Mini rugby will be back again in September and we look forward to seeing all the players and their parents again in a couple of months time.
