The Colts’ Under 16 team got their season underway with a very creditable draw against Creggs of Roscommon in a challenge game last Sunday morning.
As expected from the opening game of the season the game started at a frantic pace as both teams looked to get the opening score. It was Creggs who managed to get the first try 15 minutes into the game. After some fine back play they touched down under the posts, the conversion was duly added to make it 7-0 to the hosts.
The lead did not last too long as three minutes later the Colts got a score on the board as Jack Vahey ran through some suspect tackling to get over in the corner. The scores remained unchanged until the 45th minute when the man Vahey struck again. With his trademark speed he cut through the Creggs defence to bag his second try of the game. He also added the conversion to make it 12-7 to the visitors.
Back came Creggs to tie the game at 12-12 as they crossed for their second try of the game. Both teams had chances to win the game in the last 10 minutes but it wasn’t to be. A draw was a fair result for both teams as they work towards their opening game of the league in the coming weeks. Taking into account this was the opening game of the season there was some excellent displays from some of Colts team, Danny O’Brien was superb in the lineout while Evan Slattery’s tackling was of the highest order, while in the unfamiliar position of fullback Luke Osborne had an excellent game as did out-half Cathal Walsh.
