The Colts U13 team recorded their first win of the season with an impressive display against Ballinrobe on Sunday last.
It was the team’s first outing at youths level and the coaches were very pleased with the turnout of 19 players. The team very quickly found their shape and their stride and imposed themselves on the Ballinrobe opposition.
Number eight, Brian McWalters was first to cross for a try in the first half. He did so again soon after close to the posts. Oran McNulty slotted over the conversion. Claremorris went on to make it 17-0 at half time.
The second half saw Ballinrobe come back into the match as they scored a well put together try. Claremorris however were to crank up their efforts yet again. Scrum half, Jack Melvin capitalised with an opportunistic try under the posts. He made his score worth seven points by taking the conversion. Shortly thereafter Claremorris piled on the pressure against the Ballinrobe line.
First centre, James Heaney, dived across the try line right in the corner to earn another five points. Ballinrobe got a last minute interception try to bring their tally up to twelve points.
So it finished Claremorris 29 Ballinrobe 12. An encouraging start to the season and one that was very pleasing for coaches Mike Smith, Eoin Colgan and John Kelly
