The Claremorris Colts girls U15 team created a little bit of history on Wednesday night January 13th as the recorded a first ever win for a Colts girls team when they beat Tuam/Galwegians in round two of the Connacht U15 league.
It was cold but crisp evening in Tuam as the game kicked off for a 12 a side game of intense rugby. The Colts claimed possession from the kick off and calmly worked the ball to the wings before clearing their lines. It was a sign of thing to come as the Colts backs had the lion’s share of possession in the first half.
It was through this good play the opening score of the game arrived. After good Colts forward play the ball went wide through the excellent Lousie Reaney before the dynamic duo of M&M, Muireann and Michaela Gormely brushed through the Tuam/Galwegians aside defence to score.
The Colts ran in three more tries during the first half, thanks largely to the excellent rucking of Ashling Hahessy and tackling of Lara Quirke.
The pick of those trys was from scrum half Kaitlyn Mullaney who’s quick thinking from the back of scrum saw her crash over. Abbiegayle Ronayne was on form with the boot as she knocked over the conversions to give her side a 23-0 lead at halt time.
The Colts management made some changes for the second half but this didn’t lessen their performance and they kept their excellent playing going throughout the half. Tuam/Galwegians came back into the game with scores of their own but this did not phase the Claremorris girls with Molly Ager & Aine Mangan in particular standing tall in defence.
Four more tries in the second half ensured a Colts win. A try from Nicole Mullee started the ball rolling. An excellent defensive display from Ellen McHugh and Vicky Jennings ensuring the Colts line would not be breached as the backs continued their good work.
The back three of Orla Duffy, Rebecca Fleming & Tara Cooley all contributed to scores as the Colts ran out 41-12 winners with this win reflecting the excellent coaching from Annette, Gemma and Pearse which has taken place throughout the season.
The girl’s next game is Ballina RFC away on Saturday 23rd, time TBC. All support is greatly appreciated.
