The Colts junior side toiled in the Dunmore sunshine and snow as they were out played by a more experienced Corinthians side in the Connacht J2 league on Sunday.
The Colts drew first blood to get the game’s opening try. From a Colts lineout Liam Murphy attacked the Corinthians line before the ball was worked to Luke Ronayne who powered his way over.
The Colts didn’t have too long to enjoy their lead as within minutes Corinthians were in front. When the Colts were penalised for holding on, Corinthians worked the ball through a number of phases to score under the posts and lead 7-5.
Undeterred by the concession the Colts responded by pining Corinthians inside their own 22′. This pressure saw the Colts win a penalty which Jack Vahey kicked to put the Colts back in front 8-7. That however was as good as it got for the lads in red and white.
Again the Colts could not hold onto their lead. When Corinthians worked a close in maul off their own lineout the ball was suddenly moved to the wing where they crossed to give themselves a 12-8 half time lead.
The Colts made a number of changes throughout the second half but could not get enough dominance in open play to turn their chances into scores.
This lack of possession ultimately cost the Colts as they could not stop Corinthains from running in a number of trys in the second half which meant it was 31-8 loss for the Colts.
