The Colts U12 squad travelled full of hope and optimism to Ballyhaunis RFC on Wednesday evening as they took on the hosts in a one off U12 friendly.
A squad of 25 made the journey and the first 15 players that took to the pitch were sent out with a message to do the club proud and enjoy themselves. The Colts started the brighter and their backs were getting their hands on the ball early on. Fullback Thomas Kean in particular was really catching the eye and when he managed to cut through the Ballyhaunis defence he off loaded to the onrushing Dylan Morris who toucheddown under the posts and give the Colts the perfect start. Outhalf easily Kyle Leonard added the extras.
The Colts had their second try shortly after when Joe Lydon caught a loose kick outside his own 22′ before returning it with interest and crossing over in the corner. Changes were made for the second 20 minutes and during this period Dylan Morris really shone as wrapped his hatrick in style with two quick trys after good work by Colts forwards. Kyle Leonard again added the conversions.
The final 20 minutes saw more changes as all members of the Colts squad got equal game time. The final third of the game started much like the first as the Colts dominated which allowed Mathew Vahey used his pace and power to cross for another Colts try. The deadly accurate left boot of Cathal Joyce added the bonus points.
The Colts kept playing skillful rugby right to the end and after withstanding a huge amount of Ballyhaunis pressure the Colts managed to work a move off an attacking scrum which saw Mark Kelly get the try his performance deserved. The last action of the game was an expert conversion from Patrick Kirrane to cap a fine Colts performance.
Each member of the Colts squad can be proud of their display as their passing, tackling and all round general play was first class which will stand them in good stead for the Youth rugby campaign they will embark on next season.
