Remember the date January 18th 2014 as it will be a quiz question in years to come. When did the first ever competitive rugby game take place in Claremorris. Claremorris RFC hosted their first ever rugby game as the U14 team took on near neighbours Tuam RFC in Connacht league action.
The game started with pace a plenty as both teams looked to get the opening score. It was Tuam who did so after good work by their backs they crashed over in the corner for a 5-0 lead.
The Colts responded immediately and had the lead within minutes. The Claremorris RFC forwards barged their way inside the Tuam 22’ before the backs took over and Bradley Hughes crossed for the Colts opening score. Captain Thomas Morris knocked over a cracking conversion from near the right-hand touchline and his team were in front 7-5.
This was the wake-up call the Galway boys needed as three further tries had them 20-7 up as the teams took a half time breather.
Despite making some changes off the bench the second half went much like the first and Tuam dominated the breakdown and so possession. A Tuam try and penalty were the only scores of the half as Tuam ran out comfortable 28-7 winners.
It was a tough day the office for the Claremorris RFC U14’s but hopefully one they will learn from. At least in years to come they will always know the answer to that quiz question.
