It was a very wet start to the New Year for our U14 squad as they travelled to Tuam for their league game on Sunday.
In very poor weather conditions the game went ahead and the Tuam men started best using their big men to drive at Claremorris try line. This pressure paid off with the hosts getting the first try of the game. However that was to be last score for Tuam as the men from Claremorris took full control of the game from then on. They were led again by their excellent captain Brian Quinn who got the first score for the Colts .There was some great individual and team play on display in truly awful conditions for rugby. Steven McGreal scored the try of the half after Liam Walsh made a great break and gave the perfect offload to the supporting McGreal who touched down under the posts .It was a good day too for Brian O’Reilly who with his first touch in his first game of rugby scored a try under the posts to mark a dream debut for the new Claremorris player. The other scorers in this half were Cealainn Mullee, Brandon Walsh and Ronan Commons, with the extras added by Liam Walsh and Jack Ronayne.
The second half saw the Colts continue to dominate the possession and scoring. They also turned to the bench in the second half for freshness and in came Brian McGuinness, Oisin Hunt, Joseph McDonagh, John O Connor and Daniel McAllister. As the conditions worsened Claremorris stuck to their running rugby to score more tries. Ronan Commons started the scoring in the second half and he was helped by Liam Walsh, Brandon Walsh Brian O’Reilly and Daniel Murphy who got the last try of the game the conversions added by the trusty boot of Brian McGuinness . So a winning start to 2013, but a top of the table clash coming up in Clifden next weekend. The games are getting tougher but hopefully the Colts will stand up to the test.
