The Colts U13 team made it three wins from three games but they were made to battle right to the end in a hard fought win over Westport on the Convent Pitch.
The Colts made the brighter start and looked dangerous every time they had ball in hand. After nine minutes all their hard work and endeavour was rewarded when outhalf Kyle Leonard got the games first score via a penalty after Westport were penalised for going off their feet.
This penalty concession spurred the visitors into action and they took the game to the Colts for the remainder of the half, however their effort wasn’t rewarded as the Colts held a slender 3-0 lead as the half time whistle was blown.
Westport started the second in the ascendancy much like they finished the first. Their greater share of possession finally told when off an attacking scrum near the left touchline they worked the ball through the backs before cutting through the centre of the Colts defence to touch down under the posts and gain a slim 7-3 lead with over 15 minutes left to play.
As the minutes ticked by the Westport defence was holding strong and the Colts unbeaten record looked to be in trouble. No matter what the Colts attack tried the Westport defence always seemed to have the answers. There was however to be some very late drama. Following some great inter-play among the Colts players particularly Patrick Kirrane, Conor Toughey and Joe Lydon the ball popped out to Dylan Morris to get the all-important try. Out-half Kyle Leonard did the business from the kicking tee despite a very difficult angle and suddenly the Colts had dug out a 10-7 lead.
As injury time approached the Colts didn’t worry about protecting their lead. They stormed down the pitch through Kyle Leonard, before the Colts forwards then took over and put a number of phases together which allowed Dylan Morris to yet again add the finishing touches and seal a dramatic win. The conversion from Kyle Leonard was never going to be missed as he led his team a super 17-7 win. This was an excellent defensive performance from all involved with Kyle Leonard, Joe Lydon and Charlie Phillips in particular giving it everything from first whistle until last.
Next up is a trip to Galwegians on the weekend of November 22nd.
